Behind The Walls of the Dollhouse
Beatrix Potter’s Samual Whiskers, Edvard Munch’s The Scream and Pee-wee Herman’s dinosaur family inhabit the spaces behind the walls of three of the rooms.
The unconscious can be symbolized in many ways: as a body of water (particularly the sea), a labyrinth, a dark forest, or a cave.
These areas behind the walls of the Surrealist Dollhouse are like caves where repressed aspects of our psyche lie hidden from our conscious mind—our shadow selves. Our shadows are those areas of our inner lives that are outside of our conscious awareness. Primitive and predatory urges and existential dread are a few aspects that often reside there.
